SPM 2017: REAL Literature in English Question 2205 Paper

Hello, dear reader! Based on my personal experience last year, it is really hard to find information regarding Literature in English, an elective SPM subject similar to Kesusasteraan Melayu, Chinese Literature and Tamil Literature. Below, I will share the real exam questions from the year 2017. I will skip part (a) of each question because the answers were taken directly from the passage – and therefore do not need to be practiced. I hope these help you in your exam preparation, and good luck!

SECTION A: SHORT STORIES

Answer one of four questions.

Q1: Turning Thirty by Minfong Ho

(b) Explain how the Old One helps Rosa. [8 marks]

(c) An important lesson in life is to treat everyone with respect. Discuss this statement with close reference to the text. [12 marks]

Q2: The Winter Hibiscus by Minfong Ho

(b) Describe two memories Saeng recalls as she walks through the greenhouse. [8 marks]

(c) A child needs a mother’s love and support to go through life. Discuss this statement with close reference to the text. [12 marks]

Q3: Birds of Paradise by Minfong Ho

(b) “Nothing ever stays the same forever, not even a tropical paradise”. Describe the changes in the tropical paradise by the end of the story. [8 marks]

(c) Individuality should be encouraged. Discuss this statement with close reference to the text. [12 marks]

Q4: Embracing Your Shadow by Chua Kok Yee

(b) Describe the personality of the narrator in the story. [8 marks]

(c) A healthy relationship should be based on honesty. Discuss this statement with close reference to the text. [12 marks]

SECTION B: NOVEL

(c) It is the duty of parents to provide love and security to their children. Discuss this statement with close reference to the text. [12 marks]

Q9: The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare

(b) Describe how Portia is portrayed in the play. [8 marks]

(c) A person’s behaviour is often determined by how others treat him. Discuss this statement with close reference to the text. [12 marks]

SECTION D: POETRY

Answer one of three questions.

Q10: THEME – Lessons in Life

(b) Describe the future the persona imagines her beloved will have once she passes away in the poem Remember by Christina Rossetti. [8 marks]

(c) “In every cry of every man … The mind-forged manacles I hear.” Discuss this statement in relation to William Blake’s image of the city in his poem London. [12 marks]

Q11: THEME – Nature

(b) Describe the moose as it wanders in the forest in the poem Mooses by Ted Hughes. [8 marks]

(c) The poem The Tyger by William Blake can be seen as a celebration of God’s creation. Do you agree? Discuss this statement with close reference to the text. [12 marks]

Q12: THEME – People

(b) How are the miners similar to soldiers at war in the poem Miners by Wilfred Owen? [8 marks]

(c) There is an abundance of wealth and beauty in nature. Discuss the statement above with close reference to the poem The Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlowe. [12 marks]

    1. Hi Simren, the format that I have typed (the 4 different sections, each with 3 sub-questions that you must answer) is the format for the exam.
